Installing Your Vinyl Wall Decor
This tutorial page will take you through a common way to apply your new vinyl decor. Please note that the surface you are applying the decal to needs to be perfectly clean in order for the decal to adhere and not peel off or bubble up. This means, no matter what surface it is, all wax, dust, oils, and other contaminents need to be cleared from the surface. To do this, you can either use a store-bought surface cleaner, or make your own. A formula that works well is a mixture of water and dish soap (1 pint water, 3-4 drops of soap). Whatever the surface, clean it thoroughly with the soap solution and paper towels 3-4 times before applying the decal. Then follow the steps below.
For this Installation, You'll need:
- A surface cleaner, commercial or soap solution described above.
- Plenty of paper towels to clean the surface.
- A plastic squeegy or credit card to apply the decal.
- Masking Tape
| Your decals will come in three layers, the top layer is the application tape, the middle layer is the vinyl decal itself, and the bottom is the vinyl liner as shown to the right. |
| Step 1. After a thorough cleaning (3-4 cleanings with new paper towels and the soapy solution described above), position your decal where you would like it before removing any of the layers of the decal and exposing any sticky surfaces. |
| Step 2. While holding the decal in place, tape the top of the decal with a single piece of tape, half of the tape should be on the decal, the other half should be stuck to the surface that the decal is being applied to. The purpose of this is to keep the decal in place so you do not have to eyeball it while applying. |
Step 3. Lift the decal (all three layers together), and peel back the liner from the other two pieces. Always work slowly so as not to harm the decal.
CAUTION: Be extremely careful here not to let any part of the decal touch the surface before you want it to. Hold the decal up and away from the application surface while removing the liner. Once the decal sticks to the clean surface, you will not be able to remove it without damage to the decal. Once it's down, it's down!
PLEASE NOTE: At this point, you can spray the surface the decal will be applied to with your soapy solution and to the back of the decal (the sticky part). Doing so will help ensure the decal gets positioned in the correct location, and will not get stuck in the wrong spot. You can work the solution out from under the decal with the squeegy, and it will stick very well. |
Step 4. Starting at the top of the decal where you have your tape, take your squeegy or credit card and smooth out the surface, working your way down. Press firmly enough to apply pressure the the entire decal, but not so firmly as to tear the application tape. Keep ahold of the part of the decal that has not been applied, and keep it from touching the surface before you apply it.
NOTE: Working slowly and cautiously will keep the decal from forming any wrinkles or bubbles! |
| Step 5. Once you have the entire decal down onto the surface, use the squeegy or credit card to smooth the entire graphic, apply pressure evenly to the whole thing in all directions, starting in the middle and working your way out. If you sprayed the surface and back of the decal with solution before you smoothed it out, you'll need to work out all of the solution from under the decal. Whenever you squeeze out more solution, wipe it off with a clean paper towell to ensure the edges of the decal stick properly. You may also need to let the decal sit and dry for a while before pulling off the application tape. |
| Step 6. Once you're certain the entire graphic is down and dry, pull the application tape off slowly, starting at one corner, and keeping the piece you're pulling very close to the surface of the decal. Work Slow! If part of the decal comes up with the tape, stop pulling, lay it back down, and re-squeegy over that area. If you sprayed it, it may still be wet. Do this until you get the entire piece of application tape off the surface! |
